A Home Builders Association Initiative

Green Built North Texas (GBNT) is a voluntary partnership of local home builders, industry supporters, and sponsors committed to creating awareness and interest in the construction of higher-performance, lower-impact residential homes in North Central Texas.

GBNT has a regionally-specific green building construction protocol that Home Builders Association members have deemed essential in order for a home to be recognized by the program. Homes built to this protocol conform to higher standards of site management and waste recycling, water efficiency, indoor air quality, energy efficiency, materials, and homeowner education. Click here to learn more.

PRESS RELEASE

-Dallas, TX, April 22, 2008-

Local Homebuilders Going Green

The Green Built North Texas Program Includes
Some of the Region's Largest Builders

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Paul Cauduro, HBA of Greater Dallas
Phil Crone, HBA of Greater Dallas

Earth Day, April 22 – North Texas. The Home Builders Association of Greater Dallas (HBA) announced today that home builders are taking great strides to protect the planet and provide North Texans with homes that use much less electricity and water.

Large and small home builders are helping save valuable natural resources by building homes to meet the HBA’s Green Built North Texas program (GBNT) standards. GBNT is a partnership of home builders, industry supporters and partners committed to resources-efficient home construction. The program has established a climate-specific protocol that addresses six categories of construction including jobsite management, water efficiency, indoor air quality, energy efficiency, material usage and homeowner education.

“The commitment by builders to construct resource-efficient homes will help the region confront its environmental challenges,” says HBA President Donny Mack. “With Green Built North Texas’s independent third-party verification process and the resources that its home registry will provide, it is clear that GBNT will be a popular brand among both builders and consumers for years to come. We have much to celebrate on Earth Day.”

GBNT has established a third-party verification process to confirm that homes are built to this exacting standard. That verification process has paved the way for the Home Registry – the first of its kind in the nation.

Home Energy Raters and certified engineering companies, who serve as GBNT Verifiers, inspect each GBNT home, organize the necessary documentation and provide the HBA with the information needed to enter the home into the registry.

More than 400 registered homes can now be found on the program’s website, GreenBuiltNorthTexas.com. In coming months, all registered homes will be moved into an enhanced online search engine that will allow consumers to locate GBNT homes that are either completed or under construction by criteria such as builder, subdivision, zip code, and city.

It is anticipated that more than 3,000 verified homes could be placed in the GBNT home registry by the end of the year. The emission reductions achieved by 3,000 GBNT homes over a 30-year mortgage is estimated to be the equivalent of taking more than 30,000 cars off of the road. The water usage reduction attributable to 3,000 GBNT homes could save more than a billion gallons of our region’s vital water resources over the same 30-year period, enough to satisfy the lifetime water demand of more than 60,000 people.

In addition to providing educational seminars and technical resources for builders, Green Built North Texas continuously works to refine and expand its program. Soon to be released are protocols for multifamily construction and remodeling as well as higher levels of achievement for single-family home builders.

Homebuilders Association Backs New Dallas Green-Building Regulations

All New Homes in Dallas To Be Impacted By Measure

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Paul Cauduro, HBA of Greater Dallas
Phil Crone, HBA of Greater Dallas

The Home Builders Association of Greater Dallas (HBA) announced today that it supports the city of Dallas’ initiative to create green construction standards. The ordinance aims to reduce energy and water consumption in commercial buildings and homes. It also proposes to put Dallas at the forefront of addressing environmental issues.

The ordinance has two phases. The first phase, starting in 2009, requires that homebuilders construct their homes to be 15 percent more efficient than the base energy code. In phase 2, beginning in 2011, it requires all homes to be built to either the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard or the Green Built North Texas (GBNT) standard.

“We support the efforts to create a better-built environment and accept the responsibility that that every industry, and now every home, must share to help the region reach its air quality goals,” said Donny Mack, president of the Home Builders Association of Greater Dallas.

The HBA, which created GBNT to assist and educate its builders about energy and resource efficiencies, was part of the advisory council that helped write the new ordinance. The council was made up of industry representatives and environmentalists.

“Like all mandates, there will be a cost to the consumer, and we will continue to work with Mayor Leppert and the City Council to ensure that innovation, efficiency and cost considerations are used when implementing these regulations,” Mr. Mack said.

“Dallas-Fort Worth is home to the best builders in the nation who employ a wide variety of construction practices. Green building methods and ideas, through programs like Green Built North Texas, are intended to spur a dialog between the builder and buyer that ultimately leads to the construction of a cost-efficient and resource-efficient home,” Mr. Mack said.

The HBA’s Green Built North Texas program was created in response to the growing market demand and regulatory mandates for resource-efficient homes in the region. Green Built North Texas goes beyond code and is designed specifically for this region’s mixed-humid climate.

GBNT is a partnership of North Texas homebuilders, industry supporters and sponsors committed to resource-efficient home construction. The program’s construction protocol consists of 27 mandatory construction guidelines and requires builders to choose up to seven additional strategies that address six categories of construction. These encompass jobsite management, water efficiency, indoor air quality, energy efficiency, material usage and homeowner education. Since its introduction in 2006, Green Built North Texas has developed numerous technical resources and educational seminars in support of its construction protocol.

Recently, the program became one of the first HBA green building programs in the nation to require third party verification of compliance with its Construction Protocol and it will soon introduce an interactive, online registry of homes built to its protocol. The home registry will be the first in the nation of its kind and will allow North Texas consumers to locate Green Built North Texas homes and builders in their area.
